Why go to a driver improvement clinic?

The Commonwealth of Virginia has a system that rewards good drivers. Every full calendar year that a driver has no traffic violations, suspensions, revocations or convictions, he or she will be awarded one safe driving point. No person shall be permitted to accumulate more than five safe driving points. One safe driving point will eliminate one demerit point on your driving record.

Another way to remove demerit points or acquire safe driving points is to attend a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) certified driver improvement clinic. Up to five demerit points will be removed if you satisfactorily complete a driver improvement clinic (like this one), with the oldest points taken away first.

A driver will also be directed to attend a driver improvement clinic by the DMV Commissioner if he or she accumulates 12 demerit points based on convictions for traffic offenses committed within a 12 month period, or 18 points in a 24 month period.

Another reason to attend a driver improvement clinic is to become a more responsible driver, lower your chances of being involved in an accident, and lower your chances of getting a ticket.

How quickly can I finish this course?

The course is designed to take no less than seven and one half (7 1/2) hours, or the equivalent of a traditional in-class driver improvement clinic. The great thing about this course, however, is that you can work at your own pace. No one will be sitting over your shoulder making you slow down or speed up. We understand that everyone reads at different speeds. This program will allow you to proceed at your own pace and there is no time maximum. The average completion time varies but should be around the eight hour requirement.

How long does it take to get the certificate?

This depends on the mailing option you select. When you enroll, you may choose regular mail or expedited service. With regular mail, your certificate is sent out within 2-3 days of graduation. Because of security reasons, it is impossible for you to print your own certificate, so the original certificate must be sent directly from our office to you.

What if my deadline for completion of the driver improvement clinic has passed?

Contact the DMV for instructions regarding extension of your due date. Absolute Driver Improvement cannot extend your due date.
